Out-of-this-World Friday Fan Art

November 4, 2011

I hope everyone in my neck of the woods is safely recovering from the early winter storm that decided a fun trick for Halloween would be ten feet of snow covering the ground. For us residents in western Massachusetts, Halloween will be celebrated tomorrow night…yeah, it was that bad here. (more…)

Happy Halloween v 2.0

October 28, 2011

As I’ve mentioned in the past, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for decorating the house, dressing up, and eating my body weight in candy corn. You may even remember my custom Halloween coloring pages designed to emulate vintage decorations posted here last year. (more…)

Friday Fan Art (from France)

October 28, 2011

I often forget that my books are translated and available in many other languages and in many other countries around the world. I think this is mostly due to the fact that I am so deep in DiTerlizziland exploring my created worlds like planet Orbona, Roundbrook, or the Spiderwick Estate. But I do get reminders (like last month’s UK tour) and in the form of wonderful letters that arrive in my mailbox from fans who live very far away. (more…)

For anyone living in (or near) the Pioneer Valley, Angela and I will be attending the “22nd Annual Children’s Book Illustration Exhibit” opening at the R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, Massachusetts on Sunday, November 6th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. (more…)

A Story a Day or I Just Can’t Play

October 10, 2011

While touring through the UK last month, I became aware of a wonderful British children’s television series called Bookaboo. Its about a rock-star drumming dog named Bookaboo (who clearly is inspired by Bret Michael’s headwear). Bookaboo won’t play for his band until he is read a picture book – preferably by a celebrity visiting him backstage before the show (Hey, some bands want blue M&M’s, others…). Hence, Bookaboo has a catch phrase, “A story a day or I just can’t play.” (more…)

Friday Fan Art

October 7, 2011

For this week’s Friday Fan Art addition, where we have some lovely drawings by the very talented Elly from Canada.  Besides being a gifted artist, Elly has ambitions to be an aspiring young author and has been plugging away writing books.  Oh, and did I mention that this creative machine is just 8 years old?  Yep that’s right, check out this variety pack of drawings from some of Elly’s favorite books:  The Search for WondLa, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Kenny and the Dragon, and Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guided to the Fantastical World Around You.  Thanks for being such a big fan Elly, you rock!  (more…)

You Were Great, Britain!

September 28, 2011

This year marked my third tour through the United Kingdom. I had originally toured through the UK back in 2004 with Holly Black to launch The Spiderwick Chronicles, and then again in 2008 in support of the release of the film. So this tour was a bit different. Sure, Spiderwick and Search for WondLa were being released in paperback, but in some ways this was a celebratory tour. Just as it is here in the states, I have been publishing books with Simon & Schuster’s UK division for over a decade now. And I am proud and honored to be a part of the literary heritage that has inspired me greatly over the years. (more…)

Will Work for Food

September 6, 2011

Rovender Kitt in The Search for WondLa: “Sure, I eat because I have to. But I also eat because I want to. It is one of life’s few pleasures.”

Has anyone ever had a popover? If you have, you know the mouthwatering awesomeness that comes with ripping open this puffnormous egg-battered muffin and dipping it into sweet apple butter. Fattening: Um, what do you think? Taste: The only thing better would be an ice cream flavor called “Apple Butter Popover”. (more…)

BOOKS: The Many Colors of Andrew Lang & H.J. Ford

August 22, 2011

Dragons, trolls, nixies, mermaids, giants and fairies. I could be talking about Spiderwick, Brian Froud & Alan Lee’s Faeries, or perhaps this is (yet another) post on old D&D. But, in fact, I am referring to the collection of twelve colored fairy books collected and translated over 100 years ago by Scottish novelist, Andrew Lang, and illustrated by English inkmaster, Henry Justice Ford. Realizing Rovender Kitt (conclusion)

August 11, 2011

Let me start off by saying the obvious: I am a Star Wars nut. I was seven years-old when I was first whisked off to a galaxy far, far away. I’ve collected the toys, the ephemera, met the actors…heck, I’ve even reported on Star Wars. Like many of us, George Lucas’ vision had a tremendous impact on my imagination as I am sure Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon had on his. (more…)

Friday Fan Art

August 6, 2011

Isabella from Ohio sent in an awesome drawing inspired by Kenny & the Dragon for this week’s Friday Fan Art.  She mentioned in her letter how much she loved how Grahame (the dragon) and Kenny Rabbit became such good friends, which I think she conveyed nicely here.  Check out Grahame’s giant grin… (more…)

Realizing Rovender Kitt (Part 2)

August 1, 2011

(In case you missed it, here’s a quick link to Part 1)

Back in August of 2003, as I began work for the fourth Spiderwick book, I started thinking about re-illustrating a classic text after the Spiderwick series was complete. I spoke with my editor at the time, Kevin, and he thought it a good idea – especially given how well my rendition of The Spider & The Fly was received. (more…)

July 29, 2011

(A Cinematic) Friday Fan Art

July 22, 2011

Over the years I have enjoyed sharing with you all the amazing fan art that arrives in my mailbox. Whether its in my PO box or my email inbox, I am always touched when someone takes the time to do their own rendition of my characters. In fact, I am even thrilled by the prospect of someone improving on my designs. After all, when I was a kid I often daydreamed of creating a world richer than Middle Earth or a book more eye-popping than Brian Froud & Alan Lee’s Faeries.

Download some DiTerlizzi!

July 5, 2011

I hope everyone had a fabulous Fourth of July. I took a weekend off from WondLa 2 and enjoyed some food, fireworks and finding fireflies. Also, I uploaded all sorts of DiTerlizzi-themed downloads to the site. If you read about each title under the BOOKS section, you’ll now find lots of cool FREE stuff, like audio samples from my various audio books (read by the likes of Mark Hamill, Alan Cumming, Andrew McCarthy and the lovely Teri Hatcher), as well as a plethora of coloring pages and activity sheets for use at home or in the classroom. Never Abandon Imagination Tony DiTerlizzi: Never abandon imagination.

Imagination is a world of possibility that exists within each of us. It is what makes us uniquely human. It is our creative fingerprint that touches and influences the world around us. Imagination is essential to art and science; to innovation and prosperity. It gives us hope, calls us to action and leads to change.

Whether it’s fairies, dragons, robots or aliens, all of my children’s book characters are siblings born of my imagination – an imagination strengthened through years of encouragement from family, teachers and friends. While so many others abandoned it during their transition from childhood to adulthood, I fiercely held onto mine, hoping for a day when I could share it to inspire the next generation of dreamers. Innovators. World changers.

Imagination empowers us to envision and create a reality of what could be. We must hold it dear, foster it and never abandon it.
