BOOKS: The Many Colors of Andrew Lang & H.J. Ford

August 22, 2011

Dragons, trolls, nixies, mermaids, giants and fairies. I could be talking about Spiderwick, Brian Froud & Alan Lee’s Faeries, or perhaps this is (yet another) post on old D&D. But, in fact, I am referring to the collection of twelve colored fairy books collected and translated over 100 years ago by Scottish novelist, Andrew Lang, …

Gabby sent us some cool pics of a Spiderwick goblin that she created in her sculpting and ceramics class. Check it out: She says: I made him have a gnawed off hand to show him in battle and scary eyeballs. The back was the funnest part to do (if funnest is a word…) and he …

Friday Fan Art: Capturing a Unicorn

April 15, 2011

Earlier this year, I posted some stupendous Spiderwick soft sculptures by artist, Manuela Schulz. Manuela’s craftsmanship and ability to capture the natural form of an animal in mohair and fur reminded me of the great German toymaker, Steiff.  My daughter, Sophia, was so taken by Manuela’s rendition of the Spiderwick unicorn that I commissioned one …

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a couple of wonderful watercolor renditions of a Spiderwick nixie and mermaid from Mason. Shortly thereafter, we received a follow up piece from him that, I think, is much stronger. The difference: he created this on his iPad. Wow. Normally I would move onto another submission of fan …

This week we have some lovely pen and ink renditions of a nixie and a mermaid from Mason. Both images are inspired from the Spiderwick sequel, Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. Thirteen year-old Tobias from Argentina tells me he likes to draw a lot. He sent Ang and I a bunch of drawings including a “Strange Bird” and a “Colorful Mini-Elephant”. Fourteen-year old Cy, from Washington state sent me these great renditions of Hogsqueal and ground goblins from The Spiderwick books. Check’em out. I love how he’s slightly animated them with cartoony expressions. I think that really helps bring them to life. And I like his combination of pencil and inking. Way to go Cy!

Brian, 14, from California sent me these wonderful reproductions from Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide. I copied many illustrations as kid and occasionally still do to this day. …

13 year-old Emily of Georgia sent me a link to her wonderful watercolor rendition of the Spiderwick Nixie. Check it out. Never Abandon Imagination Tony DiTerlizzi: Never abandon imagination.

Imagination is a world of possibility that exists within each of us. It is what makes us uniquely human. It is our creative fingerprint that touches and influences the world around us. Imagination is essential to art and science; to innovation and prosperity. It gives us hope, calls us to action and leads to change.

Whether it’s fairies, dragons, robots or aliens, all of my children’s book characters are siblings born of my imagination – an imagination strengthened through years of encouragement from family, teachers and friends. While so many others abandoned it during their transition from childhood to adulthood, I fiercely held onto mine, hoping for a day when I could share it to inspire the next generation of dreamers. Innovators. World changers.

Imagination empowers us to envision and create a reality of what could be. We must hold it dear, foster it and never abandon it.
