WondLa Two
I took a coffee break this afternoon and walked back into my Florida office to see this perfect still life. It reminded me that I should announce that the second installment of the WondLa trilogy is well on its way.
When I started outlining The Search for WondLa, I planned what I hoped to be an epic tale. I broke the story up in three places based on the growing stages of the heroine, Eva Nine. Since so many fairy tales begin with the hero being an orphan, or a parentless “child of the world”, I decided to rewind Eva’s tale a bit. I felt the lead up to the events that would make her an orphan were integral to her emotional growth as her adventure unfolded.
Now I must push her forward into the complicated real world that she will ultimately have an effect on. Much of the emotional plot in book 2 deals with Eva coming to terms with the fact that she is more than just different, she is a truly empowered hero.
For Eva, learning always comes at a cost. In book 1 it was physical and emotional costs, but in 2 I feel the cost may be a loss of innocence and a shard of childhood. After all, that is part of growing up. (Frankly, I won’t really know until the writing is completed. Sometimes these themes evolve along the way.)
Of interest in the above photo are the detailed drawings of Hailey’s ship where many scenes take place. Though the airship is obviously a product of my imagination, I used a combination of traditional boat and airplane terms to describe it. Also, you’ll see an open Moleskine notebook which I’ve carried with me for the better part of a year. It is full of notes, notions and drawings on what I hope to incorporate in books 2 & 3. (There’s even a cover sketch in it!)
Lastly, you may see a copy of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. For homework, I reread this and George Orwell’s Nineteen-Eighty-Four all in preparation for the creation of my human city…
I’ll be working on the story and art for the entire year with a release date of early 2012. I know its a bit of a wait, but I want to take the time to make this an exciting solid sequel.

Is there likely to be a “Spiderwick’s Field Guide” style book for WondLa? That would be wonderful.
We shall see…I sure would LOVE to paint detailed, colored images of Orbona:)
What I felt when reading Wondla 1 and thinking how things would change in WondLa 2 because of the sudden change in Eva’s circumstances (I will be good here and ease around directly referring to spoilers) is knowing my own feelings when I was a 12 year old girl, and had spent my whole life envisioning something in particular. You tend to fantasize and over-romantisize things as a girl, and sometimes, the reality is far from what you expected, and can be a rude shock, or very disheartening, leaving you feeling like you have actually “lost” the thing you were wanting, because it never really existed, only in your imagination.
Sorry for my evasive ramble, I hope it made sense.
I second the notion for full colour images of Orbona, in your particular style, they would be exquisite.
Monika, your entire “ramble” is a major part of Eva’s arc in this story. What’s interesting is that I am tapping into the 12-year old Tony for emotions and perspective. So I am not sure if your observation of how you felt at that age is gender specific.
I am glad to have read your post. I feel like it further supports my direction with this story:)
This book belongs to the Spiderwick chronicles? I really liked the film and recently I learned that you can book it.

Yes, that is the first of the three sequel books titled Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. It centers around a new set of heroes, but has some familiar faces in it as well…
‘The Search For Wondla’ is one of the best books I have ever read, I could not put it down. I cannot wait for the second book I am so excited to see what happens!!!! O, and I lovvve the pictures it really helped me visualize Eva’s world more than I would have without pictures, so thank you so much!!
I first discovered WondLa when I played the difference game on Kongregate. I finally managed to get my hands on the book and finished it last night. It is a beautiful story, and I cannot wait to see what else is in store for Eva!
That is so great to hear, Steph. I wondered if the game was a good way to introduce people to Eva Nine’s world…now I know:)
Mr. D, I am your great fan. I love your WondLa book. When are you coming to Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. Invite me on my school holidays. E-mail me pls
I also found WondLa through the spot-the-differences game (can’t remember if it was on Kongregate or ArmorGames), and am so happy that I did! The books is amazing!
I also found Museum of Thieves through a spot-the-difference game. Between these two series and Artemis Fowl, I’m on a real YA kick. Strange when you consider that I’m 22, but I don’t care! I love it! I’m saving these series for my kids when I have some!
Thank you for writing excelent stories for kids that don’t talk down to them. I can’t begin to describe how important that is to me.
Now to find something else to read while waiting for the next book…
I read the first book and loved it. I also played the games on the site. I can;t wait for Wondla 2! And question to Tony: “What gave you the idea to write the story?” Anyways, great book1 My friends and I love it!
Thanks Jon,
I am thrilled to hear you enjoyed WONDLA. You may enjoy some interviews about it here:

‘The Search for WondLa’ is one genuis work of literature. The spectacular illustrations really brings out the futuristic theme so now I can’t imagine how the book would be like without them. 2012 sure is a long wait but I’m sure it will be worth it.
Question to Tony:
“Will we be seeing more of the character Besteel or learn the story behind his brother or is he gone for good?”
Anyway, thanks for the amazing book!
Thanks for the kind words, Amy,
Besteel haunts Eva’s mind as the second book progresses. I can’t say much on the brother…yet.
Hello!
I am 12 years old just like Eva 9 in your book. I have read HUNDREDS of books, and this one is by far my favorite.
I really enjoyed hearing about the tales of Eva, she is like me in a lot of ways. I can relate to Eva’s feelings and thoughts. I also love the character Rovender Kit. I became attached to him as soon as Eva and Rovee became friends. The way you draw and describe them makes them seem real to me.
I honestly cannot wait until the second book comes out! Really excited!!
Hi!
I found your “search for WondLa” book while I was looking around in a chapters/indigo store ,and I thought it looked interesting. I bought it and have been reading it ever scince (I just finished this morning) I espesially loved the illistations.I wish Muthr hadn’t died. but the rest of the book was awsome! I nearly cried when Rovender was crying “it should have been me!”I can’t wait ’till the second book comes out. Please write fast!
Hey!
I loved the search for wondla! It was probably about the best book i have ever read!!! The art and futuristic kind of style realy inspired me. Im 12 years old just like Eva. The book was actualy my sisters but she let me read it and i am so happy she did! Im going to get her to read it next (and probably everyone else i know!) im planning on reading the second book as soon as it comes out no matter how hard it is to get it! I cant wait!
question to Tony:
Will Hailey be sort of a main character in books 2 and 3 and will Rovender stay with Eva the whole way through?
Thanks!
Hi Olivia, thanks for the kind note. I am happy to hear you enjoyed WondLa so.
Re: your questions: I will repeat that a lot of action happens on Hailey’s ship throughout the story…Also on p. 457 Rovender makes a promise to Eva and he is not the sort to break his promises…
This book is awesome! I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait for the next one to come out. I found pictures of hydras and water bears in a biology book, and was amazed at how you adapted them for Eva Nine’s story. Will we learn more about Cadmus and the Dynastes Corporation in book two? Also, did you get the name Orbona from the Roman goddess, or was that a coincidence?
Thanks for your kind words, Cammie. I am happy to hear you enjoyed the story. In answer to your questions: yes.
Question to Tony:
Will Rovender Kit leave book 2, or does he stay with Eva Nine throughout the whole triolgy. I hope Rovee stays, because i love him SO much!
Will Eva have any more enemies like Besteel?
I love Rovee too, Mikaela. I think he’s in for the haul. He’s good like that.
…and Eva will have lots of enemies. Besteel was, by far, the easiest to dupe.
Hurray! I just finished reading the first book a few days ago, and I really enjoyed it. I was confused at a few points, but I figured you did that purposefully so you could sustain the intrigue and answer them in the later books. I have a really hard time finding books that I enjoy reading, and I was so happy when I found this book! I really like sci-fi and fantasy, so it was a dream come true. I love how you write and I adore the illustrations!
Please, keep writing!
-Molly
Thank you Molly. Yes, I did not want to tie up every lose end in the first book. I’ll save that for book 3:)

I discovered WondLa at my school at it is truly amazing. I cannot wait for the second book to come out. The imagination and creativity that goes into it makes the book way better than any other book I have ever read.
Thank you, Muffie, that made my day:)
Hi! I love the art work and i realize i probably takes a long time along with coming up with a good story board and stuff but do you have a rough time in 2012 when the second book will be out?? i’m dying to know what happens next!!!
It will be early, May I think. Before that, book 1 will be released in paperback with a sneak-peek of chapter 1 from book 2 in it…
okay cool!!! haha just in time for easter! i think??? maybe??? im not good with calenders haha
but i love love love your illustrations tho!
Hi! I read your book when I was 13 and loved it. I’m 14 now and I have read it two times. It’s such and amazing book, and the art work is fascinating. The book is so great that I even got emotional at one point. I cannot wait for the next book! The book is clearly a gift for readers!
I wanted to know if there was a movie…? And if the next books will be as exiting and hypnotic?!
thank!!!
Thanks Clau,
Paramount pictures is working on the live-action adaption of the first book, fingers crossed it will go into production. Thanks for your kind words. I hope you enjoy the second book!
I love the book. I created a website and I need help finishing it. Here is the website: http://www.thesearchforwondla.wikia.com
please add pages!
Nice start, Nick! I bet some other fans here would help you…
that would be wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
or should I say wondlaful?
I absolutely cannot wait for the second book. I had picked up the first at the beginning of this past summer, and read it in about two weeks tops, unable to put it down, and carrying it with me everywhere (and normally I don’t read in the summer).
I have read tons of great books, (my mom is a librarian) and I count this one up there with great Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. It is books like these that inspire me to be a writer!
Thank you, Claire, that’s some high praise:)
same here!
Awesome book. The absolute BEST I have ever read. 2 questions though… When I realized that Orbona was Earth, I immediately wondered how it became a dead world. And what the #%*&#$^ is the Dynastes Corporation?
I promise, you get all the answers before you even reach the halfway point in book 2…then its a whole new can of worms:)
Curse you, Dynastes Corporation! You are evil and cruel! I will have my revenge!
Yo dude! Wondla 2 isnt out yet. How can you know that it is? I mean, it created the Sanctuaries, so it can’t be all bad.
Woah. Just found “The Search for WondLa” at the library last week, finished it today… My new favorite book. Perfect mix of futuristic and hope. I especially loved the Dorceans! Can’t wait to get my hands on book two~
And… hello again. May I suggest making a Wondla fan club?
After reading The Search For Wondla, I was blown away. The book consists of a magical, mythical world, yet it is so close to how ours could be. It truly is one of the best books I have ever read and I am eager to read more of your wonderful literature works. Have a spectacular day Mr. DiTerlizzi.
I LOVED THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA!!!!!!!! i love Otto so much I wish he would be my pet!! I think the search for wondla was amazingly written and really captured what a 12 year old would be thinking through out the journey. I LOved the ending and I am really excited to read the next book and I hope Eva has lots of fun!!!!
I have read all the spiderwick books(including beyond the chronicles) and kenny and the dragon. I loved them all but this is the best yet. You have made my favorite books of all time. You have an amaizing imaginaition. I am eleven so I can imagine all of these amazing creatures. I am so glad you are making a book 2. But i have one question. Will there be WondLa vision?
I believe we will be utilizing more augmented reality in the second book as well, Jacob. Thanks for the kind words…
I love otto he is really cool i wish i could have him as a pet. he was well written. he is my favorite creature
Is there going to be a movie?
Yes! Check this out:
http://diterlizzi.com/home/writer-hired-to-world-of-wondla/
I LOVED the search for WondLa it is definitely in my top three favorite books(which is saying a lot for me because i find it so hard to find a good book)! I decided to do it for a book report but i needed to read it in a week, i thought it would be hard to do, but i couldn’t put it down i actually finished one day ahead of schedule! WondLa inspired me to join the writing club at my school and write my own novel. i just want to say thanks for writing a book that me of all people would enjoy.
Hi!
I Loved your book. I’m really glad it was a big book, because when I’m reading a small book, it suddenly ends leaving me wanting more. However, when I read big books, the tend to drag on. Your book was a big book that satisfied me in every way. I can’t wait for Book 2! When does it come out?
Is it true that people a planning to make a movie out of the search for wondla? It would be sooooo cool…. oh ya and I love ur Idea of sneakBoots… I wish I could have them, theyre sooo cool
I want sneakboots to, Kody. Here’s info on the film:
http://diterlizzi.com/home/writer-hired-to-world-of-wondla/
Somewhat unrelated, but your magnificent still life made me think of it: do you have any advice for serious artists as far as where to get reference photos? Ideally I’d like to sell my work and I’d prefer not to get sued for copying other people’s images :/ Taking your own pictures seems to be the best idea I can find, but if I do that a lot of environments might end up looking like Minnesota instead of somewhere cool and mystical.
do you know when the movie will come out and if there is going to be a trailer out soon.
Hi! I love the WondLa series, Tony. In all truth, thats my name too. And im an author. Im 11 and I wrote 3 books, working on my fourth. I wish I had people buying my books more publicly. Good Luck!
http://www.tonybodulovic.com
i have just finished reading wondla which i got for christmas,
i absolutly adored the book the characters are described the situation Eva is put in….. its amazing,
i have also read the spiderwick chronicles which i thought were amazing.
if there will be a film made then you must film some in England! The Forest of Dean is a good place (hint, hint)!
I am a huge fan of “The Search for WondLa”! I’m not one to usually read sci-fi books, but when my teacher told me about this book, I thought I’d give it a try, and I’m glad I did because I loved it! I just wanted to express how brilliant Tony DiTerlizzi’s writing is and how I can’t wait for the sequel to come out! His book combines adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, and action all in one. Of all the books I’ve read, “The Search for WondLa” is one of the best. The book is filled with details and wonderful illustrations that will have you imaging another world and all of Eva Nine’s adventures vividly. I love this book and strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great read!
Have you decided on a title yet? Will it be similar to the first one? Oh, by the way the book was so good I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading the whole thing in less than eight hours. My friends kept asking me what was so good that I wouldn’t talk to them at lunch.
Its titled, “A HERO FOR WONDLA”, Ivy. You can see some of the art here:
Hey, my older sister gave me The Search for Wondla for Christmas a couple years ago. I loved it sooo much I reread it aloud to my little sister and now we are all three super excited for the second book!! Your’re awesome!!
I saw on a website that Paramount are releasing a film on The Search for Wondla. It is my new favourite book now (it used to be Little Darlings by Jacqueline Wilson)!!! I can’t wait for when A Hero for Wondla comes out. But in book 1 it doesn’t make sense… Wondla means The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?? Or something?? What’s the picture got to do with The Wizard of Oz?? Well, anyway, please tell me the answer, and also when the film is coming out (or maybe it has… I’m not sure!!). Also, for those of you who don’t know, the book is coming out on May 8th 2012. I want more books like The Search for Wondla… I FORGOT!!! Is there a 3rd as well?
See ya!!
I read book one with my 9 year old daughter and we LOVED it! Can not wait for book 2! Is there a release date yet?
Hi Andrea, thanks for the kind words. You may enjoy this blog post:

Tony DiTerlizzi, you are at once wonderful and terrible. I just finished A Hero for WondLa, and I was blown away. I loved it immensely! I have to say that. It was in a word, wonderful. But, as with any good book series that hasn’t been finished, I’m waiting in tense anticipation for the next one. I just… kinda… need it. It’s so good, and I must have it, and I have all these questions that need answers that only the third and last book can provide. Can you at least tell us a working title?
I’ll be starting the third book very soon, Steph. It is set for release next fall. Not sure on the title just yet…
Hello! I love both of the books “The Search for Wondla, and A Hero for Wondla!” They are Amazing! Great work! will there be a 3rd book for thw Wodla series?
I’ll be starting the third book very soon. It is set for release next fall.
