WONDLA Art
With a little more than a month to go before the release of The Search for WondLa, I am finally able to share some jpegs of my favorite illustrations in the book (there are 70 total). These are all 2-page spreads that open up each chapter. There will be a small block of text on each, which is basically the inverse of what you usually see in a 500-page novel (think of the art in the chapter openers in the Harry Potter books, for instance). This first one is of my heroine, Eva Nine, and it is the opening image of Chapter 1.
…Here is Eva’s first encounter with the gruff curmudgeon, Rovender Kitt…
…and this is the wicked huntsman, Besteel, with his sonic boomrod…
This was one of the first finished images that came to mind for this book. Its of the mysterious Arius in her den.
This is Queen Ojo with her royal procession.
…and this is the world they inhabit, Orbona. Its named after the goddess of orphans…
Enjoy! I’ll be posting more, plus tour dates VERY soon!

Tony these illustrations are amazing! Even with the muted palette, they hold such a richness of texture and life – a fantastic thing when depicting a different planet, culture and civilization!!
Even though we have longer to wait here in Aus, I’m still besides myself with anticipation. The sheer amount of work you’ve put into these is instantly apparant, and with longer inspection even more attention to detail can be found!
gorgeous! gorgeously gorgeous gobs of goodness! absolutely can’t wait!!
I can’t wait for this!!!! I especially like Rovender Kitt and Queen Orbona.
I also love the design of the flying creatures in the last image.
Looks fantastic, can’t wait to read it!

I just got my copy of the wondla sketchbook yesterday and wanted to say WOW. It is an amazing little book and something I am proud to own!!
Just my opinion on the picture of Arius — I am a librarian (cataloguer) and when I saw this picture as I was skimming the book, I immediately thought it was Jabba the Hutt of Star Wars fame, right down to the details — the eyes, the huge multiple chins, the arms with the fat claw fingers, the den, the sloppy eating habits. The resemblance is striking. Looks like a wonderful story, there are not enough good books for this age bracket.
I’m a big Star Wars fan Debbie, and there is certainly an intentional Jabba resemblance here. Truth be told, many of the aliens, (the one you mentioned included) were inspired by various microscopic organisms and plankton.
