The Battle for WondLa
For my loyal readers following the adventures of Eva Nine and company, I can finally reveal the title of the third and final book in the WondLa trilogy.
The Battle for WondLa plot picks up shortly after the end of the second story, A Hero for WondLa. The story has been outlined thoroughly and I am in the process of writing the first draft, which I hope to complete this spring. In all, the writing and illustrating will take most of this year putting the release date for Battle early in 2014.
That’s a long wait, I know. But I want this finale to be exciting and deliver what has been promised in the first two installments. You will see a return of most of the main characters from both books. This includes fleshing out of smaller characters that were introduced already in the previous stories, like Caruncle from book 1:
“A grotesque, lump-faced, heavyset character strolled over to Eva. Striking cobalt blue wattles hung near its tusked snout in front of large mustard eyes. Its heavy natty jacket was worn and frayed, and it dragged on the ground, concealing most of the creature.”
–The Search for WondLa, page 361
Yes, the adjectives do go on a bit here. That is because I didn’t have time (or the page space) to add an illustration of Caruncle. I had sketched him out early on and used the sketch as my point of reference when I was writing him in.
Besides revisiting some familiar faces, there will be a new character introduced as well. And sadly, there will also be a some characters that don’t make it to the end of Eva’s story. Hopefully in the end, it will make for some entertaining and imaginative reading.
Thank you all for your kind praise, interest and words of encouragement. It keeps me going. Look for more WondLa news here soon!

We can’t wait! My whole family loves the Wondla books!
Glad to see you’re still at it Tony, good on ya!
So excited! I can’t wait.
Oh my goodness I cannot wait for The Battle for WondLa! I had a feeling it would be named that. I know that it will be simply spectacular (in both storyline and illustrations, it’s magical), just like the first two books. There’s only one thing worrying me: what if Rovender gets killed off???? I would cry, honestly, because he’s been through so much with Eva and in my eyes is a sort of surrogate father and friend to her.
Aside from that, I’m looking forward to buying the book the moment it gets released!!! Thank you so much for this wonderful series!
I’m your biggest fan. I’m twelve and I love your drawings. I learned so much from them.so exited for wondla 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my gosh! I can’t wait for the third book to come out in stores!
YES YES YES YES!!!! hey Tony, you think you can upload some sketches for wondla 3 soon?
Tony, I absolutely love this series. The story itself is beautiful, and the artwork is wonderous. I especially appreciate that you illustrate your own books, and you’ve done it in such a way that the illustrations line up exactly with the images your words create in my mind. Thank you for writing such a wonderful story, and putting so much into each book. It is well worth the wait.
Thank you for noting the synchronization of words and pictures, Kat. That is a quality I strive for in all my books.
It’s really wonderful to know that authors look at our comments, and also comment back. Not too many know how much that means to a simple fan.
My best friend and I read the first and second books of WondLa and LOVED them! I am absolutely thrilled for the final part of the trilogy to be released!
-your eleven year old fan and her best friend,
Mikay
Looks like it’s going to be a great read… The release date was so much earlier than I thought it would be. That’s certainly a relief. I’m excited to see the end result! Can’t wait!
OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH!!! oops, left the caps key on…
Can’t wait for the next book! it’s a life-changer in so many different ways!
Oh my gosh! I can’t wait till ‘The Battle For Wondla’ comes out! Tony, I am aspiring to be an author and illustrator of my own books. After I read your books, it gave me lots of inspiration. I just loved the story about the lonely girl who was Sanctuary born, searching to the ends of the world with her blue friend to find her own kind. I just know the next book is going to be rocket!

-zoe your 10 year old biggest fan
I’m so pumped for the next book! I’m actually rereading the second one now because I needed more WondLa in my life. These books are so amazing, and I’ve been waiting for the third one the moment I finished the second (which I bought the day it was released). I’m just super super excited!
I got the search for wondla for free when i went to see the hunger games, and started to read it i had 45 minutes to wait so i said why not, omg i must say i almost missed my movie! it was and is still a great read. I am 23 year old and must admit that i love this book! keep up the good work, cant wait for part 3.
Thanks Latina, I’ve wondered if WONDLA would make the leap to “big kids” who love reading stories for the young at heart. I certainly was like that at 23 (and still am today, 20 years later:)
My sister got it there too and for MCAS i asked to read it and could not put it down!!!! I then begged my parents for TWO WHOLE WEEKS to get me the book and FINALLY my dad got it!<3<3<3<3<3<3
At 16, I’m certainly looking forward to hearing of your progress on Book 3, Tony! I have a feeling Caruncle will do something silly around the other humans, and that Rovee and Hailey will survive, since they got through the second book. It sounds like it’s going to be good.
Thanks for the encouragement, Emma. I hope you like where it goes…
I picked up ‘Search for WondLa’ last year from a remainder bin. I took it home and didn’t come up for air until the next day. Same story with ‘Hero for WondLa’. I love good SF, and this series ranks right up with ‘Earthsea’ and The Time Quartet. Your illustrations are what Alfons Mucha might have drawn for Studio Ghibli (frankly, I’m surprised they haven’t come knocking yet), and your pacing is nigh-on perfect. Can’t wait for the third one!
Thank you, Vincent! I love those comparisons. Wow.
I am your biggest fan!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE put in more Otto! He is the cutest creature EVER! I have pictures of him in my locker…you make really good drawings! I have enjoyed your first two books and read the first one in about a week and the second one in two days. My parents say i am obsessed but i like to call it finding a good book and being enthusiastic…VERY enthusiastic! You are an awesome writer and i cant wait for your next book! It is hard waiting but it is SO worth it!<3<3<3<3<3<3
Otto says: Thank. You. Little one.
Tony, do you know if you will be doing any book signings for this new book…if not i would consider it…especially @ the Barnes and Noble in Burlington…that is were i go to get books!<3<3<3<3<3<3
Any events will be listed on the left column of my site. You never know…
Just overall inspired by all of your hard work! You make me work harder at my own art/illustrations and writing! Maybe…because nothing is impossible, I will get to work with you on a project.
Best wishes
2014!?!? I don’t know if I can’t wait that long!
The WondLa series is one of the best books I’ve read with such an amazing world! I’m sure the battle for wondLa well be great!! Thank you for writing such amazing books!
Thank you. I am almost finished with the first draft. I hope it proves to be worth the wait.
Hey Tony,
I loved the first two books in the Wondla trilogy and I can’t wait for number three to come out. I have read many books in my life and Wondla is by far the best one. When I read Wondla, I sit there for hours on end and i really feel like I’m right there in the middle of the action. I hate closing the book. My favourite characters are Rovender Kitt and Otto. Your books have inspired me in so many ways and my writing has got ten times better.
P.S Thankyou for the sketchbook:volume one that you gave me at your book signing at the booknook. I love all of the illustrations and how it has information about all of the characters. I look at it everyday and I will never grow out of you books.
You fan Ollie
I can’t wait any longer.
Will there be a sketchbook for the battle of wondla and I think otto will most likely die.
I do plan on a third sketchbook for BATTLE…and we’ll see about what happens to old Otto.
Oh, ok. I wonder if their will be a WondLa movie.
I think otto will most likely die.
My son cannot wait for Book 3. Any chance it’ll be out by Christmas?
Christmas 2014? I hope so!
As long as Rovender doesnt die, I’m good :s
The WondLa series is one the of the few Sci-Fi books that really draw me in. I love Eva’s dynamic character throughout the story and her relationship with Rovee. The pictures are pretty and well drawn, helping me imagine the world of WondLa.
And thank you, THANK YOU, for having COLOR IN YOUR PICTURES! My gosh, just because it’ a chapter book doesn’t mean it have to be black and white!
Love the color.
Thank you Reagan. A lot of older chapter books (like THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ) had 2-color printing, so I thought it would be cool to bring that style back:)
can’t wait just recieved a hero for wondla
I adore Wandla! They are the most precious books of my mini library. Please don’t kill Otto! Fingers crossed for Otto. Long live Tardigrades!
Long live tardigrades!
Oh. My. Gosh. After I read that about a million times, I died. Do you know why? BECAUSE I FINALLY GET TO PUT ON MY CALENDER THE DATE THIS BOOK COMES OUT!!! Sorry for the screaming. It’s because I am one of your biggest fans! Ever since I was little, I have read your books, like kenny and the dragon (A personal fave of mine when I was little). I hope you continue writing and keep up the good work!
Thank you, Jocelyn. You can scream on here anytime you want:)
