Spiderwick What if...
Angela found this cool post on designer, M.S. Corley’s blog. Here, along with Series of Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter, he re-imagines the Spiderwick series as it could have looked in the style of Penguin’s classics line from the 1950′s and 60′s. Here’s his take on Wrath of Mulgarath:

Pretty neat, huh? I LOVE seeing re-interpretations, I suppose that makes me a bit of an artsy-narcissist, but its such fun! In fact, you’ll be seeing more Spiderwick interpretations later this year…oooOOOO!

What kind of other Spiderwick interpretations, oooOOO?
Thanks for the link, your Puffin cover is awesome. Has it already come out in stores?
I just finished reading Dracula in January, so it was nice to see your illustrations of him, love the mustache, which no one seems to ever give him in pictures…
I’m wondering, how did you get to do the Puffin covers? Where you inquiring or did they approach you?
You see, with all these cover redesigns I’m doing I’m trying to attract attention to somehow get into the book art industry (covers or interior illustrations) but I really don’t know where to start… Google is failing me too :/
Any advice to contact publishers? How did you get into it?
Hi M.S.,
My cover is not due out here until next year. I think it may be out already in the U.K. however. I was contacted by the editor of the project to write a forward and we got to chatting about the new cover design where I offered to do the image for Holly’s intro.
I would say that there probably are folks who have seen what you are doing, and certainly submitting some of these into the Society of Illustrators might not hurt, nor would joining the SCBWI. My thought, though, is that this retro design would likely not be used by Penguin but likely a smaller house who is looking to repackage some classics – especially titles that are in public domain.
Best of luck to you, it was certainly fun to see your take on Spiderwick and the other popular series which are out there.
