Spiderwick Chronicles: The Completely Fantastical Edition
I am home for a spell before Holly and I head back out next week to continue our “Farewell Tour” of the Spiderwick series. A BIG thanks to everyone who came out and made the west coast events so memorable.
While on the road, and to our delight, we spied The Completely Fantastical Edition in stores which is something, frankly, I’ve been holding out on sharing with you all. (Though I did post many of the cover explorations earlier this year).
For this bind-up of the original five Spiderwick books, I took a collector’s approach. This is an approach you may be quite familiar with. Especially if you are a movie/dvd collector (like myself)…or even a graphic novel reader – e.g., when they take all the issues of a comic and bind them up into one book (also like myself – really, I am just a collector, period.).
That said, we packaged this book towards a little older reader than what the five original books were aimed at. After all, this title is close to 600 pages long(!) Yup, you read that right. But the original story itself stops around page 500 – so what did we add to this book to make it the “2-disc special edition/bind up graphic novel”?
For one thing, we pulled out all of the spot art and cameos. This helped the story flow better, and kept the original 5 titles still special. However, sometimes we’d have one of the books end on a left page with a blank right page. In that case, I went in and digitally drew on the existing spot art to make them full-pagers. Below are a couple of favs:
This is the phooka talking to the kids in book 3…
…and here is the dwarven king, the Korting, revealing an entombed Mallory in book 4.
After you finish the story proper, you then get a 30+ page sketchbook sampling some of the developmental work that went into creating the Spiderwick world. Any fans of my old gaming sketchbooks will quickly recognize the design and casual commentary I added here and there to make this section (hopefully) enlightening. Here are some page spreads:

…in fact, that ink drawing of the troll was never used in the final book. It is printed in this edition for the first time (along with some other deleted illustrations).
What follows is a section of “Lost Chapters” which Holly wrote to add little “sideways stories” on Thimbletack, Hogsqueal and the River Troll. If you collected the 3 General Mills “Spoonfuls of Stories” last year, then you’ll have read these tales before.
The finale is one many comic book readers will know and love – but (I think) this has yet to be done in a children’s bind-up collection: an all-star gallery of contemporary illustrators doing their take on the world of Spiderwick! The list of complete contributors includes:
and Mark Zug.
Below are a few jpegs from this AMAZING gallery:
So there it is, a lot of thought (and work) went into this on my part, and I am proud to unveil it to you all. If you get a chance to nab a copy, be sure to bring it to our additional booksignings as we finish up our tour. I’ll seeya there!

What’s REALLY weird for me is that this isn’t out in Canada..usually books come out @ around the same time..I guess I’ll just have to wait till October 6th before I look into it.
Q: Do you know if you’ll be having any drawing contests coming up in the near/far future???
WOW! Awesome!!! Whoa, I’ve got to get a copy!
I love the one of Hogsqueal and Bix. Both are awseome creature characters!!
Dah! Tony, what are you doing to me?? I was just going to go and quietly buy the last book and have a complete set. Then, this was mentioned on the blog, but I thought to myself, “well, I don’t need all the stories collected together.” But then, you throw in all this cool extra stuff?! The collector in me won’t rest until it is mine!
That same collector still reminds me that I’ve never managed to get my hands on one of your sketchbooks.
Hey Rob,
Certainly frustrating our loyal readers was the last thing on our mind when we created this. What fueled it moreso was that we now have a larger reader base thanks to the film. So, in some ways, this is a version for those who saw the movie first, then wanted more…or completist like me, and you:)
And yes, I need to get onto re-releasing my old sketchbooks…let me add that to the list.
Tony,
wonderfully fantastic!, I would certainly like to see those pencils close up, very inspiring, especially when they are a bit rouger. Adding this to my collection of “art of” books will be perfect and a great resource when illustrating myself….I can’t imagine having Scott Gufstafson play in my world, what a wonderous feeling. I certainly can’t wait to see it.

lol Bix and Hogsqueal- my favorite characters from my favorite books- lol, I noticed them right away. Great job, Tony. I can’t wait to read “Meno” to my little brother. I read him Ted every night for months. lol.
tony im sush a big fan!!! i just love you drawings!!! they are so perfect, you have inspire me so so so much!!! thank you
I have thoroughly enjoyed the books, both the stories and your artwork, and am wondering if, since the Completely Fantastical Edition does not reprint the color artwork from the books, is there any possibility of a putting together a small art book of some sort down the line that would collect all of the pieces from the covers, the colored pen & ink work, the prints from the trunk set, etc. in one place? I would definitely buy one for myself and several others for friends and relatives.
P.S., I love the use of spot varnishing on the dust jacket of the Fantastical Edition. I think it’s the most inspired use of that process that I’ve ever seen.
Thanks Marc,
I would think that the color work from S’WICK likely won’t be printed again until I do an “Art of” book, which is some ways off. However, there were a couple of calendars that printed the color work in a nice format…and we did do a set of color postcards for the Trunk set. Perhaps they may show up on eBay.
What did you mean by “we pulled out all of the spot art and cameos”?
Man, my copy just arrived! I love it! I wish mine was signed…. =D
this website is amazing and i do believe in everything that is in his film wooohhuu
Guerney looks did the movie version of the hobgoblin; the one voiced by Seth Rogen.
Guerney looks like he depicted the movie version of the hobgoblin; the one voiced by Seth Rogen. I like how he’s riding a protoceratops.
