NEW Limited Edition Sketchbook
It has been a number of years since I released a self-published, limited edition sketchbook. Actually it was back in 2003 when I was a guest of honor at the Gencon Game Fair. There, I did a retrospective sketchbook to coincide with the exhibition showing a decade of illustrations I’d done for role-playing and collectible-card games.
I am about to release a NEW limited edition sketchbook, this time marking a decade of creating books for children. With The Search for Wondla’s release fast approaching (Sept. 21), I thought this would be the perfect time to create a new sketchbook sampling the visual development that went into the characters, artifacts and settings.
With slick layouts from award-winning designer John Lind, Simon & Schuster has produced a beautiful two-color, 32-page limited edition sketchbook which we will give away FOR FREE at upcoming summer conventions. And we are going to start with this weekend’s American Library Association Conference in Washington, DC (June 24-29th).
Simon & Schuster will be holding an in-booth reception for Wondla at 3:30 this Saturday, June 26th (booth #2644). The first 200 friends to stop by will receive a signed advanced reader’s copy as well as the limited edition WondLa sketchbook.
If you cannot make it to the ALA conference this weekend, don’t fret. Our next big giveaway will be at Comic Con International held in San Diego on July 22-25th. I have also set aside a number of copies to give away on my site and on tour this fall. But hopefully I’ll see some of you this weekend!

awseome!
I like the design of Otto.
CRAPITTY CRAP CRAP CRAP! I hope some of these will be avalable online, as I won’t be at any cons. I do like otto.
Bummer. Decided to skip out on ALA this year. Looks like a great sketchbook though…all fun and sketchy.
Is there anyway we can buy one online? I live in Canada and I doubt we will get any tours here. My niece has been going nuts since she saw this post and is quite literally pouring over each frame. Since I have not made Bill Gates money (yet) to jet to these events, how about selling them to help a sister out?
Frigin Fantastic !…Love the sketches, something about sketchbooks seem so much more personal, and artistically pure. Alas, im stuck in Austin and will have to get the graphite inspiration later. *sigh
Looks great Tony, can’t wait for the book.

So wonderfull pictures. I love them all.
Hah ha, Otto is very common name in my country. I like his back. His so huge and looks like a bug and mammal at the very same time.
I would also like to buy this in the web if possible, because I live in Finland in Northern Europe and I don’t have enough money to travel so far as San Diego eaven Comic Con sounds great intresting.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone.
I have been thinking of making a signed “deluxe” version that can be sold. I want it to be a little different than the copies we are giving away, but still have it remain very affordable. I am thinking of approaching Bud Plant or Stuart NG for possible outlets as I have purchased many limited ed. sketchbooks through them. What do you think?
I would definitely buy one! I’ve loved your work since spiderwick and really have dug deep into rackhams works. I was wondering if you have heard of Ka-blam. They are a digital printer that I hear great things about. They also do hardcovers that I hear are affordable. Just a thought. Like i said, I’d buy whatever you put out. Once again, I love your work, you are truly one of my inspirations. Thank You!
Hey Michael,
We have the books printed already, but its good to know of another reputable printer. The issue for me is creating and implementing a store section of the site vs. selling the books wholesale to a known vendor who can handle all types of payment and ship worldwide. Know what I mean?
John Lind, who designed the sketchbook, has some cool ideas in order to make it special. Once I get some time, we’ll mock one up and post it here to get some feedback. Sound good?
Yes, I do understand. But maybe you should consider setting up a store section. Your product line is growing.! Keep up the great work!
That deluxe version sounds great!
Darn. Ummmm…. to be honest I live in the UK, but I am actually south amereican-american, so don’t let that fool you.
Do you think that you can somehow publish the delux version in the UK? I am a really big fan of the Chronicles, and I absolutley ADORE your drawings, so do you think you can somehow get this sketchbook over to the British?
Thanks!
I’ll be touring the UK for 2 weeks this fall and will be bringing a quantity of sketchbooks to hand out with me. Hopefully I’ll see you there:)
I am SOOOOO exited!!
My mom wants to know where and when (just say like,…. november) so I can go there!
Look for a girl with a brown mess of hair that has a american accent (thats what the british call it)
See you there!
Thank you very much for commenting on my drawing, i’m going to keep at my art.
Are you going to have a booth set up at Comic Con? I REALLY hope to see you there! I’ve always wanted to meet you since I saw your work on Planescape! I’m not exaggerating when i say my excitement for Comic Con shot up 1000 times at the idea of seeing you there!!!
I will be signing and speaking on a panel at Comic Con, Ronan. I’ll post my schedule once I have it finalized. Seeya there!
Hello Tony, I’ve wrote to you before thanking you for writing on my blog but i was just wondering if It was really you who wrote it. I’m sorry if it was you. here is the web address

Hi Harry,
Yes that really was me, and yes, you really did a nice rendition of the Leatherwing sprite. Keep drawin!
Thank you and sorry I asked. Also I really love the Chronicle drawing (:
Hi Tony.
Quick question ( actually questions).
#1: When does your tour of the UK start and end? I don’t want to miss it! ( unless I already did)
#2: Would you recomend low quality watecolor pencils ( I kinda got mine from the local dollar store)? I’m kind of an art freak, and I am not sure I should have bought them because they DO NOT WORK (and yes, I am using them correctly)!
Your fan
My name is above
Hi Rebekah,
your answers:
1. The WONDLA tour has not happened yet in the UK. We were trying to do it this fall, but it may end up happening early in the spring. I have no confirmed dates yet, but will post them here as soon as I do.
2. I don’t use water color pencils too often, but I also don’t discriminate on where I purchase my art supplies. If the pencils are not working for you, then I would try another brand. Best of luck!
Hi Tony, any chance your US tour this fall includes a stop in San Francisco? You are one of my very favorite illustrators and I would love to come see you, purchase Search for Wondla and hopefully snap up one of those sketchbooks.
Are your book tour dates published somewhere? Good luck with it!
Sincerely,
Meg
Hi Meg, I don’t have dates nailed down just yet, but San Fran is on the itinerary. I’ll post details as soon as they are confirmed:)
AWESOME TONY DITTERLIZI WENT TO OUR SCHOOL AND I GOT MY BOOK SIGNED NOT FOR SALE;D
HI TONY ONE QUESTION WHEN ARE THEY GONNA MAKE A MOVIE OF THE BOOK
They are working on it, grace. But these things take time. Lots and lots of time…
I looooooved Wondla! When do you think you will come out with the second book?
