Doodle 4 Google!
Calling all young artists! Imagine getting an opportunity to design the Google logo to be shared and seen by MILLIONS. Then, imagine your artwork gracing the package of a box of Crayola crayons. Now, imagine winning $30,000 in scholarships, plus an additional $50,000 for your school. That, my friends, is the grand prize for a contest unveiled today at Google…and I am one of the judges:)
This year’s theme is one that is near and dear to my heart: “If I could travel in time, I’d visit…”.
Come on! How cool is that!?
Kindergarten through 12th grade artists can participate. In fact, here is a nifty video that explains it all.
My Spiderwick collaborator, Holly Black and I will be part of the esteemed panel of judges, which include fellow children’s book star, Mo Willems, as well as singer, Katy Perry(!) Finalists will be flown to New York City to join the judges in announcing the winner on May 17th.
So what are you doing still reading this? Go! Get drawing! I look forward to seeing some familiar names in the final judging.

Dear Mr. DiTerlizzi,
I have to share a little story with you. One fine afternoon, what seems like many moons ago now, I entered a bookstore with my two young boys. Always on the lookout for a great read aloud book, I spied “Jimmy Zangwow” from a distance. The three of us sat down on the floor, right in the middle of the children’s department of the store, and read the book from cover to cover. My boys and I were hooked, and so began my journey with Jimmy.
After a brief rest on our home bookshelf, Jimmy’s next visit was to my sons’ pre-school, much to the delight of many 3 and 4 year olds (I have a GREAT marsman voice, and my Grimble Grinder was captivating!). Jimmy made the jump to elementary school with my boys as they shared him with their new school friends and teachers. He sat in on some grad school classes and was introduced to fellow teachers-in-training, who promptly added Jimmy to their own classroom libraries. Jimmy has been shared with each of my best friends’ children as baby gifts (I believe in starting a child’s personal collection of great books from birth). And Jimmy visited each of my classrooms, delighting kids of all ages and used to model great writing and illustrations for middle elemetary students.
I’m now a media specialist in an elementary school, and a whole new group of elementary students are being introduced to Jimmy. He is quickly becoming a fan favorite! If you are going to be doing any promotional events near the Western Massachusets area, I would love a head’s up…my students would absolutely LOVE the opportunity to meet the genious behind one of their favorite picture book characters!Imagination is alive and well in Longmeadow : )
Wishing you much success with Wondla!
Sincerely,
Krishna Longanecker
