If you had to pick the book out of this series you like the most which one would it be and why? I ask cause I was thinking of buying one from the folio society but didn’t have a clue which one to go for

Heh - yeah, I only focused on his inkwork in this post. I would like to focus on his color work in a future article...they are awesome! Dover's art book on H.J.Ford reproduces a lot of his color work.

Your detailing of these books being faves in your family home when you were young could’ve just as well been our house now! I got the entire series in the cheapo Dover editions years ago, but now my young daughter’s reaping the benefits in LONG reading sessions. Her favourite so far has probably been ‘The Goose Girl,’ but her fave illustration is almost certainly of The Welwa in ‘The Fairy of the Dawn.’
I cannot believe, though, that you offered us these beautiful first-edition scans, but not one of the exquisitely lovely colour plates! What’s up with that?!

I saw that illustration of the maiden being grabbed by the monster in another book of Irish folklore and really liked it; it seemed like Rackham but more refined and perfected.
Glad to now know the source and hope to check out some of the Fairy books in the future.
