A Hero for WondLa Sketchbook
Just as was done with The Search for WondLa back in 2010, Simon & Schuster has printed a limited edition sketchbook featuring some of the designs that went into the illustrations for A Hero for WondLa.
Throughout the year, I handed out these 32-page, 2-color softcover sketchbooks at my various appearances. If you missed me, fear not, for I have sent a signed bundle of books over to my pal Stuart Ng.
These were printed in an edition of 2000. The first sketchbook is long gone (in fact, I only have a few copies here in the studio for my library), so once Stuart sells out of his stock, that will be it until we release the third sketchbook next fall to coincide with the release of the third WondLa book.
The sketchbook was put together by my good pal, John Lind, and designed right here in the studio. It was tough choosing my favorite sketches to jam into the 5 x 7-inch presentation, but we did it. And I hope you enjoy it.

Just ordering it!!! Question…do you have any posters from the Wondla books or anything that I could purchase to use in my art room? Was thinking of doing a lesson on children’s books and thought a poster would be a great visual.
I don’t have any WondLa posters, but send your request to my assistant (studio@diterlizzi.com) and we’ll set ya up with some other posters:)
Thanks!
Nabbed me a copy of this sketchbook not five minutes ago. It looks gorgeous. Now if only I could find a copy of Volume One for sale…
I’ve been following your work since Planescape was released (it was a fun world to play in, but to be honest I really just bought the sourcebooks for the artwork).
My kids and I finished reading “The Search for Wondla” last night, and we absolutely loved it. They wouldn’t go to bed unless I read them at least one chapter. Book Two is sitting on the dresser, waiting to be started tonight.
Keep up the good work!
Hi Tony, I am a huge fan of your stories and illustrations (especially the wondla series). I just got a copy of a wondla sketchbook volume: 2 and really love it! Would love to get a copy of wondla sketchbook volume: 1, do you know where I can get a copy?
Did you check with Stuart to see if he had any left? I don’t have any more here in the studio. It may be time to stalk eBay…
Wow! I love your work and art The Search For WondLa was the first book I actually read! I started writing because of you! Anyways I just wondered if you had any plans for the third book… I can’t wait till it comes out.
I really like your art work too… What median do you use… I wanted to incorporate it into my own art.
Thanks Annie,
The WondLa art is drawn with technical pens on vellum. Then the pieces are colored digitally using Photoshop. The sketchbooks actually show a little step-by-step process. Now that I think of it, perhaps I’ll also add it as a blog entry. Hmmm….
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. How can I get in contact with Stuart to see if he has any copies left?
Wow, your artwork is amazing. I love the visual style of the WondLa books. :O
Tony, when will the 3rd book come out? BTW, LOVE the sequel and the art work is superb! You think you can use the blue coloring again?
I’ll use a different color for the 3rd book, Jon. I’ll also announce a schedule very soon.
Tony, can ya give us a hint of what color you’re gonna use?
yes. It won’t be blue or green:D
My daughter was lucky enough to get one of these at your signing for the first book! Just reviewed the newer one for the Guardian:

Another stellar book! Thanks for inspiring her.
Thank you, Michael. Please let your daughter know that Eva, Rovender and I also thank her.
Your Wondla books are amazing! I talked my 50 year old dad into reading them and he loved them too!
I think that The search for wondla should be made into a movie…
I would really appreciate it, if you posted the release date for book three. My and my dad are looking forward to it!
I’am writing a science fiction/fantasy right now. The main character is a girl Eva nines age. The search for wondla inspired me to write my own novel that I finished. (Now I just have to go back and edit it… You know how THAT goes:) anyway just wanted to let you know how amazing your books are!
Thanks:)
Hey Chloe,
I LOVE hearing that both you and your dad enjoyed the books. That really means a lot to me.
I’m also thrilled to hear that it has inspired you. That’s fantastic!
